On July 16, 1897 Reverend Dimitri Kamneff and Deacon Vladimir Alexandroff from Seattle Washington arrived in this area, which at the time was known as Limestone Lake District. On July 18, 1897 they held the first Orthodox Divine Liturgy on Canadian soil and simultaneous blessed land for a church and cemetery. |

Although many of the settlers east of Woking were of Ukrainian origin and of Orthodox religion, they did not have a church on their own in pioneer days. Consequently many of the young children born in the early years were not baptized. There was no minister in this area. |

In the late 1920s, pioneer homesteaders began settling on virgin land north and west of Spirit River town which was then the frontier and the end of the Northern Alberta Railway. |

On May 20, 1903, the church parishioners obtained forty acres of land from the government, for the purpose of constructing a church and establishing a cemetery. The arduous task of cutting, hauling, trimming, and hewing the logs started in 1904. |

The first church in Serediak district was built in 1904--1905, and was registered under the Statutes of the North-West Territories. Either in 1919 or 1920, lightning struck the building and it burned to the ground. However, in 1922, a new church was built on the same site and it continued to serve the parish until 1966, when once again fire of undetermined origin completely destroyed the church building. |
