Wostok Parish (History)

On July 16, 1897 Reverend Dimitri Kamneff and Deacon Vladimir Alexandroff from Seattle Washington arrived in this area, which at the time was known as Limestone Lake District.

On July 18, 1897 they held the first Orthodox Divine Liturgy on Canadian soil and simultaneous blessed land for a church and cemetery.

Woking Parish (History)

Although many of the settlers east of Woking were of Ukrainian origin and of Orthodox religion, they did not have a church on their own in pioneer days. Consequently many of the young children born in the early years were not baptized. There was no minister in this area.

In the late 1920s, pioneer homesteaders began settling on virgin land north and west of Spirit River town which was then the frontier and the end of the Northern Alberta Railway.
